Phil Roebuck Steps Down from the Chamber

After nine years as CEO/ED of the British Chamber Shanghai, Phil Roebuck has decided to step down at the end of the year.

Dear Members,

After nine years as CEO/ED of the British Chamber Shanghai, I have decided to step down at the end of the year. During my time, we have transformed the Chamber into a highly respected professional business organisation.

From the start, I restructured the Chamber and introduced a business development function with a greater focus on meeting members and understanding their business in China. I also encouraged members to engage with the wider British business community through the Chamber.

We expanded the number of Focus Groups to cover the full spectrum of British business in east China. This allowed us to provide more business events with greater diversity on topics and speakers whilst maintaining a high quality of delivery.

I fostered relationships with sister Chinese business organisations to bring the British and Chinese business communities closer together in the interests of growing Sino-British trade.

The transformation of the Chamber could not have been achieved without the support of the many Executive Committees, and respective Chairs, I have had the privilege to work with over the years.

There have been so many highlights during my time with the Chamber including overseeing three prestigious British Business Awards (BBA’s), a yearlong celebration of our Centenary year in 2015 and the establishment of the Chamber WFOE allowing us to provide new services to our members.

One area of the Chamber which has given me the greatest pleasure was the community outreach work carried out on behalf of our members, specifically with Cerecare and our Centenary project, Bright Eyes. As a co-founder of the Bright Eyes project, it was truly rewarding to make so many visits to Lixin County in Anhui Province to see first-hand the work of the project and the benefits it provided to the children. All of our community outreach work would not have been possible without the support of our members and, on behalf of all the beneficiaries, I would like to offer my sincere thanks for your kind generosity.

The success of our Chamber could not have been achieved without the hard work and dedication of my staff and, once again, I am privileged to have worked with some truly outstanding talent, both past and present, and I wish them all the very best for the future.

The Chamber has been a significant part of my professional career and I feel truly honoured to have had the opportunity to engage with so many successful British businesses across a wide spectrum of industry sectors.

What makes our businesses successful is not just the products or services we provide, but the people we employ and collectively they are all our members. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our members for the support that they provide to British Chamber of Commerce Shanghai, the oldest international Chamber of Commerce in China and, in my opinion, the BEST! I wish you all continued success for the future.

Phil Roebuck
