[Review] City of London Lord Mayor Reception [Global Visionaries Event]

On 23 February, the British Chamber Shanghai and the City of London welcomed the 689th Lord Mayor of the City of London, Alderman Dr Andrew Parmley, to provide insights and updates on the latest developments from the City.
Touching on the success of Sino-UK leadership, the Lord Mayor highlighted the significant leaps forward made across various industries, including Fintech, financial inclusion and green finance. In the renewable energy sector, the Lord Mayor also congratulated the Chamber on the launch of the Offshore Wind Hub.
Providing a glimpse into the range of other pioneering Sino-City advancements, the Lord Mayor spoke of the significant developments made by UK firms in China’s pilot Free Trade Zones and the trading link created through Stock Connect.
With the official triggering of the Brexit process looming, the City of London continues to represent the interests of British businesses both domestically and internationally.
By uniting under a ‘Global Britain’, the Lord Mayor underlined the importance of working with China to identify solid business opportunities and overcome all upcoming competitive business challenges.
Having addressed the growing strength of the UK’s financial services sector, the Lord Mayor shared the optimistic future for the UK’s global economic performance with members by highlighting London’s unique collection of skills, expertise, and professions.
As the presentation drew to a conclusion, the Lord Mayor shared promising case study developments as the City continues to progress, including:
- Wells Fargo purchasing a new EU HQ in the City of London;
- China Life establishing its first office outside of Asia;
- Shanghai Clearing House soon to be opening in the City of London; and
- Bank of America Merrill Lynch searching for larger offices.
