The end of the year 2011 saw the beginning of what promises to be a fruitful relationship between The British Chamber of Commerce Shanghai and The Shanghai Entrepreneur Association (SEA).

Established by high profile Chinese entrepreneurs, SEA is one of the most influential Chinese Chambers of Commerce in Shanghai. SEA has over 300 corporate members from a variety of industries and sectors and was established three years ago. Chaired by Mr. Zheng Yonggang, President of the Shanshan Group, SEA’s members include renowned privately owned Chinese enterprises such as Fuxing Group, Zhengda Group, Spring Airlines, Junyao Group and Pudong Development Bank to name but a few.

The Strategic Cooperation Agreement signed between SEA and BritCham was overseen by Richard Barnes, the Deputy Mayor of the City of London, at the Invest London, Go UK Summit. The aim of this summit was not only to augment relations between London and Shanghai but also to provide greater understanding on how to take advantage of UK’s capital markets and how to deepen cooperation with UK enterprises.

By working with SEA, we are aiming to enhance the opportunities already provided to our members as well as offering new ones. These include; the chance to collaborate with private Chinese enterprises with the potential of investment; build stronger relationships with local government; the opportunity to connect at provincial level with other Chinese Chambers; increase internship opportunities for UK students within Chinese companies and finally, the opportunity for our members to learn more about their Chinese clients or potential clients.

To boost this partnership, the Chamber has been invited to nominate our Chairman, Rory Farquhar-Thomson, to sit on SEA’s Executive Committee as Chairman on Duty. Rory seeks to deepen SEA’s and their members’ knowledge about the UK business community in both Shanghai and back home.

This agreement is an exciting prospect for both Shanghai and London, and BritCham is eager to begin working together with the Shanghai Entrepreneurs Association to enhance our respective business communities.
