The British Chamber of Commerce Shanghai and the City of London cordially invite Chamber members to a breakfast with Alderman Peter Estlin, the Lord Mayor of the City of London 2018-2019.

Alderman Peter Estlin took office as the 691st Lord Mayor of the City of London on 9 November 2018. His mayoral theme is “Shaping Tomorrow’s City Today”, promoting innovation and technology, championing digital skills, and addressing digital and social inclusion.

During this breakfast with British Chamber Shanghai members, Alderman Peter Estlin will share the City’s latest update, consider opportunities for the UK to work more closely with China in areas such as Fintech and Green Finance. In addition, he will talk about the potential collaborative opportunities with leading Chinese innovative cities (Shenzhen, Shanghai and Beijing) on digital skills.

This breakfast is a high-level networking opportunity that will appeal to senior executives from industries including financial & professional services, legal, construction & real estate, energy & environment, information technology and business services. This event is by invitation only.

Business career

Peter Estlin is a Senior Advisor to Barclays plc. He trained as a Chartered Accountant, becoming a partner with Coopers & Lybrand in 1993. The majority of his career has been spent in Banking, initially as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for Salomon Brothers Asia, then CFO for Citigroup’s Investment and Corporate Banking divisions in New York and London. He joined Barclays in 2008 as Group Financial Controller and has been CFO of the Retail & Business Banking and Non-Core divisions as well as Acting Group CFO.

His non-executive appointments include HM Treasury (NED Audit Committee - 2015 to date), London Fairness Commission (Commissioner - 2015 to date), Morden College (Trustee - 2015 to date), Bridewell Royal Hospital, a foundation for disadvantaged children (Chairman - 2006 to date; Governor - 1993 to date) and British Airways International Advisory Board (Chairman - 2007 to 2015).

Previous/current professional involvement

Peter was elected an Alderman of the City of London in 2013 and elected Sheriff for the City of London for the year 2016/17. His civic responsibilities include being a member of the City of London Corporation’s Education Board, Finance and Establishment Committees.

He was Master of the Worshipful Company of International Bankers in 2017-18, and a Court Assistant of the Chartered Accountants and Educators, as well as an Ironmonger. He is also sponsoring Alderman for the newly formed Guild of Human Resource Professionals.
