The scale, speed and impact of China’s urbanisation is unprecedented in world history. However, to make this effort sustainable, new technologies in design, financing and construction need to be considered and developed. Our event will take place at The Disney Lab which is pursuing solutions to sustainable living, health and wellbeing for society.

To bring our members professional views from the front lines, the Chamber’s Financial Services Focus Group and Construction & Property Focus Group invite Dr. Ben Schwegler, SVP & Chief Scientist at Disney Research China, Daniel Drew, Senior Manager, CEO Office, HSBC and Dr. Wang Yong, Founding Partner of Greenment Capital, to this site visit and presentation.

Dr. Schwegler, will start the evening with a tour of The Disney Lab. He will discuss the role of technology in reducing risk in development projects and the role of R&D in developing quantitative, measurable sustainable solutions.

Daniel will follow with a presentation on Green Finance (origins, current state and outlook) and how China is starting to use this type of financing to successfully urbanise, after which Dr. Wang will join Daniel and Dr. Schwegler for a panel discussion, during which he will share his personal experiences of investing in a ‘Green China’ through M&A, startups and the design and development of environmental liability insurance products for the China market.

Speaker Introduction

Dr. Ben Schwegler

Senior Vice President & Chief Scientist of Walt Disney Imagineering R&D, Managing Director of Disney Research China

Dr. Ben Schwegler is Senior Vice President and Chief Scientist of Walt Disney Imagineering R&D and the Managing Director of Disney Research China. Disney Research China is a multidisciplinary organisation of engineers, architects, scientists and other design professionals chartered to understand the interaction of the built and natural environment, and to design infrastructure and buildings to minimise their negative impacts. This approach is unique in that it merges innovations in the design and construction industry with the more traditional scientific approaches to sustainability. These innovations allow us to simulate and predict the interactions of buildings and infrastructure, with the natural environment; allowing us to build with higher quality, more rapidly and with less waste than before. In addition, new tools like Multi-objective Design Optimization (MDO) offer the opportunity to analyse designs with unprecedented levels of complexity.

Ben is also a consulting professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Stanford University. He has authored dozens of scientific articles and book chapters, and has several US Patents. He is a member of the US National Academy of Construction and a winner of the Henry R. Michel Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).
