John Edwards graduated from the University of Oxford in 1995 and joined the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 1996. He studied Chinese at Beijing Normal University in preparation for his first posting to Shanghai as Consul Political and Economic in 2000. On his return to London in 2003, he worked in a number of roles including the Head of Human Rights Policy and Projects, Head of Consular Policy and as the Foreign Secretary’s Speechwriter. He was Deputy Consul General at the British Consulate General in Jerusalem from 2008 to 2012. For the past three years he was Minister Counsellor at the British Embassy in Beijing where he oversaw UK-China relations on energy, science and innovation, low carbon, health and urbanisation across the five posts in the mainland China network.
